The current Canadian government under Trudeau’s leadership has admitted its role in the Israeli occupation of Palestine, even after both of the highest courts, The International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), issued independent rulings that Israel is committing genocide to date in Gaza, and the Israeli presence in the West Bank is an illegal occupation.
While Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said, in September of 2024, Canadian-made weapons will be prohibited from reaching the Gaza Strip, it’s a statement that is incorrect and unbelievable for many reasons. First of all, Canada lacks the capability to insure and monitor that these weapons aren’t being used in Gaza; also, Israel is not an honest broker, and even if that was a condition stipulated in the deal by Canada, Israel would simply break it. Canadian weapon manufacturers produce multiple parts for various weapons systems, from grenades to armoured vehicles to F-35s. These parts make the majority of military exports that Canada provides to Israel directly and indirectly. Israel is running out of all types of weapons and vehicles as they suffered heavy losses in both Gaza and Lebanon, which makes them desperate to use any weapons at hand. They even re-called older vehicles into service. Israel’s desperation has increased as many law-abiding countries—such as Spain and unlike Canada—are starting to enforce an arms embargo on them. So, it’s most certain that Israel will use Canadian weapons sent by the Trudeau government against the civilian population in Gaza.
When the United Nations’ top court (ICJ) stated, in July of 2024, that Israeli settlement policies in Palestinian territories, such as the occupied West Bank, breach international law, it was well before Joly’s statement, which makes her admission on public record damning. There is no dispute that the Golan Heights region is illegally occupied by Israel as well. It might have been the Canadian government’s attempt to distance itself from the most obvious and documented case of genocide ongoing in Gaza, but in doing so Mélanie Joly has admitted that Canadian weapons are being used in other illegally occupied areas like the West Bank or the Golan Heights. She has condemned this liberal government to the ranks of war criminals.
In the next Canadian election, it’s likely the Conservative party is set to win based on the populist leaning, but when it comes to giving away Canadian weapons and tax dollars to Israel to participate in genocide and illegal occupation, the “cons” are no different and could be worse. I have information on good authority (source withheld) that the conservative MPs in Ottawa have been flying the Israeli flag on the screen in their parliament lunchroom since October of 2023. They are clearly destined to be in the dust bin of history themselves.
While the Canadian government has not shown any sincere willingness to abide by international law, it is our duty as free people of the world to hold governments accountable for their actions. Writing a letter demanding actions from your local representatives might not have an immediate impact, but it adds to the mounting pressure that Israel and its Zionist allies are facing around the world. We encourage you to write your local MP, the Prime Minister, and Mélanie Joly as well, expressing your opposition to this illegal use of Canadia tax dollars and the use of any Canadian-made products in any crime, especially genocide and illegal occupation. Your letter will serve as another piece of evidence against them in potential litigation, or at the very least it will serve as a historical document that must be preserved in the archives.
