Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
Dear Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly:
Dear Minister of National Defence Bill Blair:
I am writing this letter to stress Canada’s obligation within international laws and the need to uphold international and local laws regarding the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. The latest rulings by the ICC and ICJ leave Canada with no option but to implement a complete boycott on the rogue Israeli regime.
Throughout the year 2024, the world witnessed and documented a level of disregard to international laws and legal bodies by proponents of the Israeli occupation and its allies. This went as far as to ignore arrest warrants and court rulings issued by the highest international courts. In the case of Canada, it went as far as to ignore Canadian domestic laws. Canada is not only a signatory to the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act. Canada went a step further by implementing this into domestic laws. To date, Canada is in violation of this act.
The abandonment of the rule of law will have repercussions around the globe, and nations that continue to enable it are sure to suffer heavy loses. Legal actions have been initiated against heads of states and officials who, by ignoring domestic and international laws, were instrumental in allowing the illegal occupation of Palestine and the genocidal practices of the Israeli occupation to continue.
Around the globe, law-abiding nations have recognized a threat to their own sovereignty while others have moved to reject Israeli practices because rejecting it is the right thing to do. As Canada lags, it is never too late to find our way back on the right side of history.
United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has called for a medical boycott towards Israel. This was echoed by Canadian doctors who visited Gaza recently and saw the devastation firsthand. Ireland moved to cut ties with Israel and the Israeli embassy closed its doors in that country. South Africa, supported by many nations, brought a case in front of the ICJ accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian population of the embattled enclave known as Gaza Strip.
I hope that you find inspiration in the above examples and display the same courage as your Irish and South African colleagues have displayed.
Canada must do the following:
- Cut all ties with Israel. This is no different than Canada’s stance against other rogue regimes like North Korea.
- Impose a serious arms embargo. While this was the spirit of the Canadian vote on the arms embargo to Israel in 2024, it was watered down by liberals and conservatives until it lost its meaning. This could be restored to be effective.
- Impose a medical boycott in line with the suggestions of UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese.
I’ll be following up with you and your actions taken on this matter.
Thank you for your time.
